What's Included in Phase I?
HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC, Sept 21, 2023 – Hilton Head Island Airport is thrilled to announce the commencement of Phase I of its Terminal Improvements Project, aimed at modernizing and enhancing the airport’s facilities to meet the growing needs of passengers and the surrounding community. The project is spearheaded by the architecture firm The Wilson Group, headquartered in Charlotte, NC, and will be executed by Edison Foard. The contract, valued at $30,898,447.83, is projected to span two years and is funded through a combination of FAA Grants, SC Aeronautics Grants, State Funds secured by the local delegation and airport revenue.
The first phase of the Terminal Improvements Project focuses on enhancements that directly improve the passenger journey from arrival to boarding.
Enhanced Passenger Experience
The terminal improvements are designed to make travel more comfortable and convenient. Expanded gate areas, additional seating options, and upgraded technology will help create a smoother experience from arrival to boarding.
New Terminal Features
Phase I introduces a new TSA screening checkpoint, redesigned gate areas, updated furnishings, and two passenger boarding bridges. Together, these additions modernize the airport and improve passenger comfort.
Safety & Accessibility Improvements
Enhancements throughout the terminal will improve safety, accessibility, and ease of movement. New boarding bridges, improved pedestrian circulation, and a service animal relief area help create a more traveler-friendly environment.
Community Collaboration
The project was shaped through years of collaboration between airport leadership, local governments, businesses, airlines, and community stakeholders. Their shared vision helped guide the future of the airport.
